Here’s the latest situation that’s come across my desk, but with a year-end twist.

Q. Our basic question concerns phone calls we have received towards the end of this year from several credit card companies stating that they are going to write off our balances as bad debt at the end of this year (for their tax benefit we assume). Their “threat” to us is that although they will be writing our debt off as bad debt, they will also be selling the debt to a third party who will continue to try to collect the full debt amount (despite likely having paid only 25% or less of that full debt amount) and/or continue to hurt our credit for years to come.

We responded to them that we have the legal right to deal only with the original creditor (and not a third party) to which they responded that the third party who bought the debt would “become” the original creditor legally and thus legally be considered the original creditor.

A loyal reader of monitorbankrates.com alerted us to this deal. Citibank is offering a $100 checking account bonus for AT&T Universal Credit Card holders who currently don’t have a checking account with Citibank.

To receive the $100 checking bonus, you have to open a Citibank regular checking account and “perform qualifying activities.” When you open a checking account you have to make a minimum deposit of $1,000 by January 31, 2010.

Last week, Florida had its first real cold spell of the season. When I went outside to let our dog stretch his legs after a night indoors, I could see my breath and I very much regretted leaving the house without at least two more layers of clothing. While we did not get the snow that the North got, it was still a lot colder than we are used to here in the Sunshine State.

And when it gets cold in the South, it can mean only one thing for our two SUVs. At least one of our batteries will die. As if programmed for it, the battery in my wife’s Envoy died the night that our cold spell hit. We called AAA, an annual experience for us when it gets cold, and had our battery replaced with a AAA battery. W
