Eurozone November Factory Output Growth Exceeds Expectations

() - Eurozone industrial production grew at a faster pace in November, exceeding expectations, official data revealed Wednesday.

Factory output rose 7.4% year-on-year, following an upwardly revised 7.1% growth in October, the Luxembourg-based statistical office Eurostat said. Economists were looking for an increase of 5.9%.

Month-on-month, production increased 1.2% in November, after a 0.7% rise in the previous month. Economists were looking for a 0.5% gain.

In the EU27, factory production grew 7.8% from last year, much faster than October’s 6.9% rise. On a monthly basis, output advanced 1.4%, after a 0.4% growth in the previous month.

Westpac Says “Absolutely No Truth” To Reports It Is Looking To Replace Gail Kelly

Australian banking major Westpac has issued a strong denial to reports that suggest the lender is looking for a replacement to current chief executive Gail Kelly.

On Tuesday, Westpac said there was “absolutely no truth” to a report in the industry news letter Banking Day which said that the lenders chairman Ted Evans had given a search mandate to head hunting firm Egon Zehnder for a new CEO.

Responding to the speculation a Westpac spokesperson said the report was “completely false” and that no mandate had been issued nor any executive search firm been retained.

“There’s absolutely no truth to that (report),” the spokesperson said.

French Jobseekers Rise In November

() - The number of registered job seekers in France rose 0.8%, or 21,300, month-on-month to to 2.7 million in November, data released by the country’s Labor Ministry showed Friday. Compared to last year, the increase was 2%.

French jobless rate stayed at 9.7% in the third quarter, statistical office Insee said on December 2. It predicts the rate to ease to 9.5% by mid-2011.

In its latest outlook released on December 16, Insee said continuing poor labor market situation is likely to take its toll on wages. It said real wage growth would be small in mid-2011.

Businessman Says Australian Super Rich Are Appalling And Greedy Scrooge’s

Businessman Dick Smith has branded Australia’s super wealthy as being “appalling and greedy” after many refused to donate 20 per cent of their income to charity for the holiday season.

Mr. Smith was particularly scathing of bank bosses, all of whom he wrote to a couple of weeks ago urging the chief executives of Australia’s four largest banks to donate a fifth of their income.

As of Tuesday morning none had pledged their support.
