Pakistan Raises Key Policy Rate To Rein In Inflation

() - Pakistan’s central bank has decided to raise its key policy rate by 50 basis points to 13%, as concerns about the persistence of inflation and the weak fiscal position outweighed improvement in the recovery process.

The State Bank of Pakistan, in its monetary policy council meeting on Friday, unexpectedly hiked the rate after keeping it unchanged for three consecutive rate-setting sessions. The central bank was widely expected to keep the interest rate unchanged.

“Concerns of persistence in inflation and fiscal weaknesses are overshadowing the improvement in the external current account deficit and economic recovery,” the SBP said.

If you were designing a bank now, from scratch, for growth and maximum profits, what kind of bank would you build?Bank earnings this year — from the biggest and most aggressive investment banks such as Goldman Sachs () to the do-everything behemoths such as JPMorgan Chase (), to the lending-oriented banks such as U.S. Bancorp (), to the specialist banks — don’t give a single definitive answer. It’s hard to tell whether the old models are in need of serious overhaul or just taking a breather, and there are serious doubts about the future profitability of many classic banking activities.

And I think that’s healthy — even if it makes life hard for investors.

E*Trade Posts Second Quarter Profit

E*Trade Financial the online brokerage company has returned to profitability after posting second quarter profits on Wednesday for the first time in three years.

The company has not faired well after its business was negatively impacted by bad loans made by its banking division, which reported its seventh consecutive drop in loan loss provisions.

Net charge-offs, or loans that E*Trade doesn’t think it can collect, were $US225 million ($252m), falling 42 per cent from a year ago.

European Commission Extends Portugal, Spanish Bank Support Schemes

() - The European Commission on Friday extended the bank support schemes of Portugal and Spain until the end of this year. The Commission has already extended its authorization of bank guarantee schemes in Sweden, Germany, Austria, Latvia, Ireland, Spain, Denmark, The Netherlands, Slovenia, Greece and Poland.

The extended Portuguese guarantee scheme requires the banks to pay higher premiums for the guarantees granted by the state. This is to encourage banks to finance themselves without state support and to limit distortions of competition, the Commission said in a statement.

A majority of support schemes for financial institutions, put in place in 2008 and 2009 to ensure financial stability, have been periodically extended, generally for six months, when requested by the member states concerned and justified.
