Collecting Debts of Dead Relatives

Paying the bills of the deceased
It seems some banks and credit card companies (or collection companies hired on their behalf) are going to extra lengths to get some old bills paid by the relatives of dead people. If you have a relative pass away and they owe money to a bank or credit card company – you probably do not owe this bill on their behalf.
Yet, there are reports that some people have received phone calls saying that their relative left an upaid loan or bill and they are being asked to make it good. These professional telemarketers seek to have you pay the bill of a deceased relative.
To our knowledge, the only time a collections agency could go after you is if you inherit money from someone who left an unpaid bill. But be sure to consult an attorney if you receive a phone call or letter of this nature to ensure your rights are not being violated.
