Ratings Agency Sets French Outlook To “Negative”

The market week started with a degree of optimism which sent stocks higher on the hope that political leaders within the EU would get together on Sunday and announce concrete measures to support the banking sector and shore up nations with sovereign debt problems: a line drawn in the sand, if you will. Whilst this may still happen (as it must do, sooner or later) at the weekend, German remarks that a deal may not be ready for the weekend sent them back into the red.

To add to the general air of gloom, ratings agency Moody’s has warned that it may have to change its outlook statement for the French economy from stable to negative over the coming months. I

Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of the megabestseller “Eat Pray Love,” has an essay in the latest issue of O magazine called “Confessions of an Over-Giver.” She writes that when she suddenly became rich from the proceeds of her book, she indulged her long-standing tendency to give too much–and did it on a grand scale. “I was like an alcoholic locked in a distillery–what wonderful and terrible luck!” she writes.

Credit Card Surcharges vs. Cash Discounts

Have you ever noticed that certain businesses offer a discount for paying with cash vs. credit? This practice is particularly common at gas stations, though you’ll sometimes see it at other businesses, as well. And yet, as we’ve discussed, it’s against the policies of the major card networks (Visa, MasterCard, etc.) — and, in some cases, against state laws — to charge a premium for using a credit card.
